And we start September off with a festival! If there is only one thing you do this Labor Day weekend, it should be getting to Governor’s Island for their annual Pig Island food festival. Now in its third year, this pork-themed barbecue fest is an all-local event, featuring 25 chefs from every borough making delicious pork dishes of all kinds, from all over the world. Not only are the chefs local, but so are the pigs: all of the eighty hogs on Governor’s Island today will be from local farms. The beer and wine, also included in the ticket price, are from New York as well, so you can be assured that the island will be a full-on locavore paradise today. Even better is the fact that the money raised through Pig Island will stay New York City local: every year, Pig Island partners with Community Partner Food Systems NYC, and a portion of the day’s proceeds will go to the organization.

Although all the early-bird tickets have flown the coop by now (heh), you can still purchase all-inclusive tickets for the festival that runs from 11:30-4:30 today. Tickets are $85 but you’ll get all the pork you can eat, all the craft beer, wine, and local cider you can drink, plus live music and chef demonstrations to boot. Children under 12 are free, and the ferry to and from Governor’s Island is, as always, gratis, so this is a great day trip for a family. It’s a fantastic day on the city’s most popular new home-away-from-home, Governor’s Island, with good drinks, live music, some of the best up-and-coming chefs New York has to offer, and–of course–delicious pork! Where can you go wrong?
