I’m so glad that they’ve opened up Governor’s Island to the public! What a beautiful public park to have as an oasis right in the middle of a super-crowded urban jungle. I mean, Central Park is great, and serves its purpose, but Governor’s Island feels like an entire world away from Manhattan, even though it’s just a free ferry ride away.
Take advantage of the great island park so close to us this weekend at the Governor’s Island Cook Out! It’s a weekend-long festival full of food, drinks, entertainment, and lots of fun! The event celebrates outdoor grilling by local chefs, craft beers from Sixpoint Brewery in Red Hook, live music, and tons of other attractions. If you didn’t get enough of a competitive-eating fix on Wednesday from the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, Cook Out NYC offers the second annual Kimchipalooza, a celebration of the spicy Korean cabbage slaw that does (and should) go on everything. There’s even a kimchi eating contest! I can see bland, meaty hot dogs and buns, but eating all the spicy kimchi you can swallow really fast? That’ll be so difficult, I have to check it out!
The ferry ride to Governor’s Island may be free, but tickets cost $30 for General admission and $45 for a beer ticket to go along with your hot dogs, burgers, wings and kimchi. It’s happening both today, July 7th, and tomorrow, so you’ve got two days to get in your great Cook-Out!
