Ah, chocolate mousse. The mix of conventions and textures in chocolate mousse is delightful to the young, the old, and everyone looking for a sweet treat in between. The definition of a mousse is a food that is light and airy due to the addition of whipped cream or egg whites, and can be either savory or sweet. But I think a chocolate mousse is way more delectable than a venison mousse! Adding the chocolate to a mousse makes the rich, heavy (and sometimes overbearingly so) flavor of chocolate lighter and creamier, while giving flavor and color to the mousse. It’s a match that makes so much sense as an accent to a fruit dessert, a dollop on top of some ladyfingers, or as the main component of a dessert itself–in, say, a chocolate mousse cake.
One of the best ways to get your daily chocolate mousse fix is heading way, way north in Queens to College Point, where the tiny bakery La Cheesecake is located. There, they serve a chocolate mousse cake that has everyone in every borough talking. Moist and decadent, the dessert is a rich chocolate cake served with layers of fluffy chocolate mousse in between and topping the cake. It’s that wonderful combination of both light and dense textures, complete with a deep chocolate flavor. And the price is so great–just $2.50 per slice–it’s worth the price of the Metrocard to get out here to try it.

Some reviews from Yelp.com:
“My partner and I decided to do a little cake buffet. We brought home a small plain cheesecake ($13.95), a slice of chocolate mousse cake ($2.50), and red velvet cupcake ($1.75) for a price amount about $18.00. I thought the plain cheesecake tasted amazingly fluffy! It was delicious. As for the chocolate mousse cake, I felt in love with it. As a chocolate lover, the chocolate mousse cake was the cherry on top of all the three desserts. The chocolate is my favorite dessert out of the three.”–Linda C.
“The chocolate mousse cake is heaven – moist, rich, and decadent .. one of the best chocolate cakes I’ve ever had.”–Vy N.
