March 11 – Oatmeal Nut Waffle Day
What a weirdly specific day! While National Waffle Day isn’t until August and National Oatmeal Day is all the way in October, you can mix those two breakfast favorites together for today’s National Oatmeal Nut Waffle Day. This doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all (and I will never say no to nuts!): the oatmeal brings whole grains to the table while the nuts provide a great flavor, texture, and good fats, and making them into a waffle makes it all accessible and highly delicious. I wish more waffle mixes made oatmeal-nut flavors!
Unfortunately, not many waffle purveyors in the city serve such a dish–not many of them serve oatmeal waffles at all. But you can hopefully luck out this Sunday by scoping out the world famous Wafels & Dinges truck, wherever it may be on its route. One of the pioneer gourmet food trucks in the city, Wafels & Dinges serves up some super-classy waffles, some sweet, and some savory, and all delicious, for a fantastically simple price. It’s so popular that Bobby Flay held up the challenge to its chefs on Food Network’s Throwdown–and they won!
Get to this brunch truck on the right day, and you may catch one of their daily specials, called the Raisin Heaven: an oatmeal and raisin waffle with buttermilk icing. It sounds absolutely divine! (And the addition of oatmeal totally makes it healthy, too. :P) Since Wafels & Dinges allows you to put any “dinges” to their freshly made waffles as you like, you can add a handful of walnuts to your order. Instant Oatmeal Nut Waffle! And even if you don’t get the Raisin Heaven that day, it’s always nice to have a freshly baked waffle with some wet walnuts on top, if I do say so myself!

Some reviews from Yelp.com:
“Their daily special was a Raisin Heaven Waffle — raisin oatmeal crumble with buttermilk icing for $7. The waffels taste like they’ve got a good amount of sugar in them already, as the edges are already crispy and caramelized even without icing.”–Andrew C.
