January 24 – Peanut Butter Day

As all those ads on the subway a few years ago told us, peanuts go well with so many things,

from beer to chocolate, and the simple taste of peanut butter can bring us back to wonderful

memories of childhood. Without taking actual statistics, I’d say that peanuts–and peanut butter–are the most well-represented food ingredient on the National Food Days list, with everything from cookies to clusters and the good ol’ peanut butter and jelly sandwich. With so many items already added in the food days’ calendar, it’s a bit difficult to find one place that does peanut butter so terrifically well that you have to single it out for National Peanut Butter Day.

But Peanut Butter & Co. in Greenwich Village does just that. Not the best peanut butter cookie, not the best peanut butter sandwich, but plain ol’ peanut butter–the best there absolutely is. Their all-natural, vegetarian (all but the honey flavored are vegan) line of peanut butter comes in a variety of flavors, including cinnamon raisin swirl, mighty maple, and dark chocolate dreams. You can order by the jar online, or head into their store for confections and other treats made with their product–from cookies and sundaes to their signature sandwiches that change every week. The atmosphere of the cafe is fun and perfect for kids angling for their PB&J fix, but such sandwiches as the Peanut Butter BLT and the Cookie Dough Surprise tell you this place is all business when it comes to the taste of their food.

To fully celebrate the peanut butter extravaganza here, order the Peanut Butter Sampler. You’ll receive tastes of all eight of their flavored peanut butters and tons of PB dippers–celery, apple slices, and melba bread. It’s the perfect way to try out all the interesting ways you never thought you could have peanut butter before. And how better to use that knowledge than to come in again, knowing your favorite flavor, and try out some cookies or a sandwich for those National Food Days! Or just come in whenever the peanut butter craving hits you 🙂

“Smooth or chunky is only the beginning: Savor the sticky stuff 21 different ways at this kitschy cafe, where you’re transported back to elementary school with one bite of “ants on a log,” celery sticks slathered with the peanut butter of your choice and studded with raisins.”–NY Magazine

Some reviews from Yelp.com:

“We decided to go with the PB & Co Sampler. To me this was a great selection because it was a way to get a taste of everything. With this sampler you get to try all 8 peanut butters and its served with carrots, celery, apples and melba bread. I also got the two pieces of Vegan Black Bread on the side as well, which I highly recommend.”–Lauren L.

“Peanut Butter & Company offers the most delicious flavors of peanut butter (from White Chocolate Wonderful to Cinnamon Raisin Swirl) that are also healthy and contain usually no more than four all-natural ingredients. Their sandwiches are creative and their service is fast and efficient.”–Ben E.
