January 22 – Blonde Brownie Day
While the blonde brownie, or “blondie,” is considered to be the non-chocolate equivalent of a brownie, their makeups and consistencies–and definitely their flavors–are very different. Instead of cocoa powder giving the blondie its flavor, like with brownies, the main sweet component is brown sugar. They usually come out denser than chocolate brownies, and because the flavor is more subtle than the powerful, popular cocoa, more things are usually added to the batter or on top of blondies, such as chocolate chips, nuts, coconut, or anything else that might taste sweet and delicious 🙂
You won’t find as many blondies advertised in New York City bakeries as brownies, but they’re as much of a staple as its more well-recognized confectionary cousin. Fat Witch Bakery on the West Side, known for its many different types of brownies, makes the Blonde Witch, a freshly-baked blondie that goes over so well with Fat Witch newcomers and regulars alike. They come with a variety of toppings and add-ins, like chocolate chips and walnuts. Even better is Fat Witch offers their blondies as a raw mix, so you can make your favorite desserts right at home.

Some reviews from Yelp.com:
“The Blonde Witch brownies were at hit for some friends of ours. I recommended that they warm them before serving and add whipped cream or ice cream. I don’t think they did the latter and still enjoyed them.”–Brian M.
“I ended up buying a regular brownie for my friend and the Blonde witch brownie for moi. I didn’t eat it right away and ended up having it the next day at work for a snack. OMG!!!! i loved it!!! it hit the spot, i was in brownie heaven. it was sweet but not too sweet, it was soft but crumbly soft. i tasted every chocolate chip that was baked into this little piece of perfection.”–L S.
